His dazzlingly eclectic repertoire encompasses all the song traditions of the British isles and north America, more or less elderly pop songs, and more recent items by Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Leon Rosselson, Richard Thompson and Steve Tilston, as well as his own selection from his father's vast songbook. Master of the unaccompanied (don't say 'a cappella'!) singing tradition in which he was raised, David also accompanies himself, usually on five-string banjo (which he frails in the old-time manner) or ukulele.
