High Contrast is young Cardiff-based DJ/producer Lincoln Barret, one of the leading artists in the soulful drum and bass scene. His music takes in many styles, from liquid funk and house to garage to soundtracks.     While studying film making in Newport, Barrett's focus moved to making music, with a deep-rooted love of drum and bass originally awakened by hearing J Majik's Arabian Nights. Influenced by the film soundtracks he'd been working with, his interest in films went down as his love of making music went up.     Mastering the mixer, turntables and Cubase while at college, he set about making his own music. Soon he had secured a residency at Cardiff's drum and bass night Silent Running, and was working part time in the dance record shop Catapult.     Through his residency at Silent Running Barret played alongside DJs and producers including John B, Grooverider, Marky, Digital and London Elektricity.     Signed to Hospital Records on the strength of his minidisc demos and the recordings Passion and Suddenly, he quickly rose up in the drum and bass scene.     High Contrast's debut album True Colours was released in June 2002. Critically acclaimed, it raised his profile as a DJ and remixer and put him in the centre of the drum and bass scene in Wales.     High Contrast's second album, High Society, was released in September 2004 to great acclaim. That year it was the most successful drum and bass album in the UK.
